USS MULLINNIX DD-944

Midway Island
Another 4 October? WTFO?

Mullinnix in "Twilight Zone" - Experiences a 2nd 4 October!

3 October (?), 1972 (1 day from the International Date Line)

Dear Mom, Dad, Sue
We pull into Midway the ‘second’ 4th of this month. Tomorrow is the 4th, and then we cross the International Date Line. We have about an hour of the 5th, then another 4th (all day), then the 5th, 6th, etc. They still don’t have any confirmed dates on our arrival in Norfolk. They estimate the 27th of October, which should be pretty close. I hope I can see Tom Wilkerson while I’m home. It’s been a long time.

My shopping spree in Hong Kong was worth while, but my money didn’t stretch as far as it was supposed to. I borrowed some money from the credit union. I’m starting an allotment to pay in back. I loaned (Greg) Berry (FTG3) $100, he’s taking leave from Hawaii. He said he’d meet me on the pier with a beer! Can’t beat that.

One of the gunnersmates (GMG2 Jim Roland) and I are going to get an apartment when we get back. He lives about 40 miles from Berry in West Virginia. He’s getting married in December but his wife is going to finish school in West Virginia. We’ll probably live about 3 or 4 blocks from Berry. Berry’s going to get us one, so we’ll have it when we get there. We’ll be in the shipyards for 6 months, so it will be a good investment.

I’m going to try to send enough money home to pay that loan off in Broken Bow by February. I won’t be able to fool around much with that (bill), the apartment, and credit union. So I won’t have to worry about bringing my stereo home just yet, maybe next summer. I’m definitely going to get an insurance policy for it.

I got all my Christmas shopping done. I got dad 2 toys he’ll flip over. Sue will be tickled to death, and Mom will probably faint!! (Pearls). I can hardly wait. Well, I have to write to Shirley, Steve Forwood (telling him I’m coming home), Larry Nord, and Engle. So write soon and I’ll call from San Diego. Love, Frank
