(Courtesy of William D. Horvath) In May of 1983, the Admiral called us up to his office, where he had a photo from the 1950's of this huge battle group. He wanted a photo of HIS battle group. The most famous photos from that day, shot just before we got to Mombasa, is theg roup with a diamond of diamond formation of planes and a shot from in front with the planes above. But I always liked this view as the formation broke up so the carrier could recover the planes. In the foreground is the almost new USS Kidd DDG-993 (Commissioned 27 March 1981; Decommissioned 12 March 1998), then the USS Mullinnix DD-944, the last all gun destroyer in the Navy and the cruiser USS Dale DLG-19.

The bridges that Mullinnix steamed by in 1983 were torn down in 2006
and replaced by the new Arthur Ravenel Bridge to accommodate larger
container ships entering and leaving Charleston
All part of the local "port expansion project"
