It almost makes you misty eyed with nostalgia...

The Bad News:
We lost the LAST of the Forrest Shermans on 22 July 2004...
Check out USS Decatur E-31 for the details.
The Decatur was the LAST Forrest Sherman on active duty.

The Good News: USN christened USS Forrest Sherman DDG-98 in October 2004
See Christening Invitation

More Good News:Update: On 31 May 2005 The House passed H.R.1815 EH, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006. This legislation included the following text, "(a) Transfer- The Secretary of the Navy shall transfer the decommissioned destroyer ex-U.S.S. Forrest Sherman (DD-931) to the USS Forrest Sherman DD-931 Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization under the laws of the State of Maryland, subject to the submission of a donation application for that vessel that is satisfactory to the Secretary.
Next up: Find a permament home for the ship - still searching (as of 8 Jan, 2008

News Update:The USS Edson is no longer a Memorial ship in New York City. Currently she is in Donation Hold Classification in Philadelphia Naval. Groups will be free to appy for the donation. Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum is trying to raise funds to move her to Bay City.

Update: Who do you believe? Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum? Wisconsin Naval Ship Association, Inc.?
I guess it doesn't matter, as long as we save the Edson!!!

The Forrest Sherman Class Destroyers

The "Barry" Class Destroyers
Some literature lists these eight (8) Forrest Shermans
as members of the "Barry Class" to impy their conversions/upgrades.

The "Decatur" Class Destroyers
Again, some literature lists these Four (4) Forrest Shermans
as members of the "Decatur Class" to highlight their conversion to DDG status.
